I enjoyed pak Sani's class.
Three cases that we discussed during pak Sani’s class are
1.The quality of education
The quality of education can be seen from two aspects: the quantitative and qualitative aspect. The quantitative aspects have relation with the academic skills for example having high score at National Examination, accepting at State or famous University. While qualitative aspects are related with soft skills such as: self confidence, discipline, responsibility and hard working. Pak Sani also raised a question why our society always thinks about the quantitative aspects but never the qualitative. As educators, we must be aware that the qualitative aspects are very important, especially when students finish their study and live within the society. Overall, schools should consider both academic skills and soft skills.

The quality of education in one school is determined not only by the quality of the input of students but indeed it is determined by the teaching and learning experience , the quality of professional teachers, the facility and the culture of the school.

2.The Effective School
An affective school should have:
a) Rigorous Instructional Program which is supported by the conducive learning environment, good instructional leadership, school- based development , the parent and caregiver engagement and partnerships organizations.
b) The learning and teaching process supported by instrumental input ( teachers , curriculum, teaching materials ) , raw input ( students ‘interest, ntelligence and aptitude ) and environmental input ( inside and outside the school ) to achieve the goal.
c)School Culture
School culture is the behind-the-scenes context that reflects the values, beliefs, norms, traditions, and rituals that build up over time as people in a school work together. It influences not only the actions of the school population, but also its motivations and spirit (Peterson, 1999)
School culture can affect the way teachers relate with each other, students, parents, administrators, and the community and can affect how problems are solved, the ways new ideas are implemented and how people will work together.

Some examples of school culture are:
a)Greeting , smiling and
shaking hands
b)Flag Ceremony
c)Mother’s day
d)Celebration of lebaran day and
Christmas
e)Counseling
f)Friday prayer
g)Students’ magazine
h)Teachers’ meeting or conference
i)The celebration of the
Independence Day
j)Praying before and after school
k)Interactive dialogue between
teachers and students
l)Keeping clean environment
m)Healthy life
n)School Canteen
o)Students’ Day
p)Using Javanese Language every
Monday
q)Students'farewell party
r)Reunion of SMAN 5 students

I feel grateful for joining last week class. I was interesting and awakening for me. Pak TSani taught us a lot about school culture. There are many things that I learned from the lesson, but I will explain three of them.
First of all is the quality of education (Mutu Pendidikan). Quality of education is divided into two aspects- Quantitative and Qualitative. Lots of people, especially parents measure the quality of schools by the quantitative aspect, such as: the score of National Exam (UN/ UASBN) and the academic skills of the students. Thus, they neglect the qualitative aspects of schools that related with the students’ quality (self-confidence, independency, hardworking, responsibility, and other important soft-skills). Before I joined this class, I was a person who measures schools by their quantitative aspect. Now, I realized that ‘scores’ or’ numbers’ is not everything.
Those two aspects are influenced by the students’ potency, the teachers’ proficiency, the facilities’ quality, and the school’s culture. Schools’ culture can be divided into four types- formal, prosperous (berkesejahteraan), dynamic, and dying (“Mati Segan Hidup Tak mampu”). In formal school culture, students are encouraged to achieve high scores academically, but the relationship between students and teachers is weak. In prosperous school culture, the relationship between students and teachers are great, but the encouragement to achieve academic skills is weak. In dynamic school culture, there is a strong encouragement for students and teachers to participate in all schools aspects. The last type, “Mati Segan Hidup Tak Mampu” is the kind of school which is both, the relationship and the academic achievements are weak.
Surely, all of us would expect and appreciate the school culture which is ‘Dynamic’. But now the question is how to create such culture? Before figuring out the answer, we should know the definition of school culture first. School culture
The second importance is the definition of school culture. School culture is a set of values, beliefs, and rules or norms which are thought and determined together (determined by all the people involved in an organization) and then used to control behavior. The characteristics of school culture are ‘trust’ among the school stakeholders, wide opportunity to participate, ideas and innovations, encouragement to achieve more, and all members as learners.
The third and the most important thing is how to create culture. The answer is by doing these four steps.
1. Involve all school members
2. Invite suggestions and accept criticism
3. Formulate them in the written form
4. Devise SOP (if necessary)
5. Monitoring
6. Evaluating continuously

I personally enjoyed Pak Abdullah Sani’s class because of his warm personality and interesting ways of explaining the materials. There are three things which I learned from Pak Sani: The qualitative and quantitative aspects of a school, the quality of a good education, and the school’s culture (which is related to the quality of education.).
About the qualitative and quantitative aspects of a school, I learned that quantitative aspect (the students’ scores in final exams, in tests) is not a dominant factor which determines the success of education in a school; it is actually the qualitative aspects (the habits learned, the values, the soft skills) that determine the success of education in a school. These qualitative aspects will show an accurate prediction of how the outcome of the students’ value and soft skills later on. According to the researches made by many educators, soft skills, skills dealing with attitude, manner, and building relationship with people, are the ones which are dominant in determining success in the students’ lives.
I also learned about the quality of a good education. The quality is affected by four factors: the quality of the input (the students), the teachers’ professionalism, the learning facility, and the school’s culture. It was a new paradigm for me that the school’s culture turns out to be one of the dominant factors in determining the quality of education in a school. Before joining Pak Abdullah Sani’s class, I believed that a school’s culture was merely a product of whether a good or a bad education. Then in his class I learned that actually a school’s culture can be formed and molded.
To form or mold a school culture, there are some suggested ways: Finding information from the existing habits and behaviors at school, making a written goal of what kind of culture wanted to be operated at school, and monitoring and evaluating continually. By putting effort to form a positive school’s culture, a school may benefit a lot from it, in term of improving the quality of education in that school.

It was a great time to get the chance to share with a practitioner. I learned a lot from Pak Sani the way he sees the school and his life. From the way he talks and interacts with us also teaches me the wisdom and calmness in dealing with the situation.
The discussion that he raised is on the area of 3 main points : the quality of education, the culture of the school and creating the good school culture.
1. QUALITY OF EDUCATION
There are two aspects to measure the quality of education, the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Quantitative here means everything that is related with numbers/ scores or even fame. When a school can graduate all the students, the school is then seen as a good school. It is such a warranty that annual graduate numbers become the basis of assessment. Qualitative, on the other hand, mentions how the school is seen from the students' " inside " quality such as independence, discipline, hardworking etc. Unfortunately, the society is not very attentive on these aspects
2. SCHOOL CULTURE
there are 4 types of school culture ( formal, berkesejahteraan, akrab dinamis dan mati segan hidup tak mau ). This school culture is characterized by the relationship among teachers and students. I was made clear and able to analyze the school culture of the school in which I used to teach.
3. BUILDING SCHOOL CULTURE
to build a school culture we can create simple activities. The most important things is when creating a school culture, there should be a cooperation among all aspects of the school. There is no need of sign or written announcement to introduce a good school culture. Doing the activity and showing the example is a good way to implement the school culture.

Through the discussion and the lesson, I learn a lot about leading a school and managing the teachers effectively.

Thanks to Pak Sani for the lesson and bu Anita for giving the chance to meet pak Sani.

Three things I learn from Pak Sani’s Class:
1. A positive school plays a key role in promoting student learning, academic achievement, positive youth development and increased teacher retention.
2. Creating a positive school culture takes the work and commitment of the entire school community. Using survey data as well as detailed, disaggregated discipline and attendance records can help to hone in on issues. When examining the data, it is important to foster and maintain an atmosphere of open communication in which everyone is valued and decisions are made collaboratively.
3. A culture of distrust, chaos, or disrespect impedes student and staff motivation and may limit the extent to which students achieve. On the other hand, a positive school culture can be viewed as the foundation of safety, pride, respect, trust, and motivation on which a school can build the structure of high academic achievement for all students.

I learnt some lessons taken from the the field of education in Indonesia, especially the one that Pak Sani had encountered before.

1. The essence of Education
while majority knows and even expect that schools must have high achievement in academic area, shown from, for example, the result of national exam and the numbers of their students accepted in high profile universities, it is important to focus on the heart of education itself: the education of the students as human. These include a sense of belonging, good character, responsibility, confidence, punctuality, and all other human qualities. These qualities are the ones that the students need in real life later on in their job or family.

2. School Culture
I realize more that it is important to note thing that the school members perhaps do not easily observe, but the newcomers may observe: the culture of the school. As for the cleanlines, it can even be seen from its restroom. furthermore, it can be seen from the teachers' relation whether there are confronting gossiping activities or not. Moreover, te relation between teachers and students can be seen through a simple thing: the students' greeting to the teachers.

3. Maintaining a good culture
While a good culture is built, it is more or less another responsibility to aintain it. New academic year means new students and maybe staff, theefore, the school administrators must introduce it endlessly. To introduce it does not mean we merely apply it coercively, but through good examples from all school members. Action speaks louder= Leading by example.

It is a great opportunity to attend Pak Sani's class as I can learn a lot from his experience how to lead a school. In fact, we all know how hard leading a school is. In this short session, I learned:
1. Quantity VS Quality
It is a common thing how society measures the success of a school from the number of students who can pas the national exam with the great score. This reality is understandable since the national exam becomes the final destination that the students have to go.Yet, I personally agree with Pak Sani that each student is precious and unique. They have their natural and born quality as human beings. Therefore, we need to help them to explore their abilities so that they can improve betteras the ones who will later be parts of the society. Once again, it is not about the quantity of students who can pas the exam, but how the graduated students can use their potency afterwards in the society.
2. School culture
Culture is value and belief that are embraced by anyone involved at school. It is formed by all aspects who dela with the education life such as the principal, teachers, students and parents. The school culture can exist by the understanding how the good attitude and good daily habit need to be nurtured. The students do not need to read the list of what they have to do, but they need to see a model. By the time, they will follow what becomes the daily habit. Creating a good school culture is not easy, but is not impossible to do it as long as there is the same perception among people at school to create it. It will be seen as the character of a great school by anyone who visit the school.
3. Establish an effective school
A school must be a safe place for students to experience and explore the potency with a help from the professional teachers. However, we need to know that this relationship and effort will be successfully done if parents also actively involve in any circumstances conducted by the school. It is important for students to know their parents' willingness to support their activities. Moreover, the school should plan any program fro parents so that they can take part in their children's achievement.

Pak sani's class is great because what he has talked about was all about the fact and reality. Iam interested in his statement because there is a kind of gap between the reality and the theory in Indonesia now, especially in Education. What is stated by the Government Official or written in books are definitely different what I can see in the real situation. The first thing I am interested in is about the quality of education. Our society and our government only concern on the quantitative aspect. They consider the success of the school is merely on the good achivement in UNAS, or the number of students who are accepted in good and qualified universities. They don't care about the human quality of the alumni. If so, I think what the school given to the students is not EDUCATION but just LEARNING.
The second idea I got is about the effective school. In my opinion effective school is like the organization that there is a closely relationship between the input, the process and the output. The most important part heer is the process. The school has a good process if it has a good leadership, it means the principal can lead and manage the school, the principal can listen the teachers and the students, the principal can solve the problem if there is a crucial situation, and the principal should also be a good model. Besides the school should have good culture. it means the school should have a good habit in learning process, in giving the students some values such as the value of honesty, the value of diligentness, the value of spiritualism, etc. I have got many experience that the school is said to be qualified because of their grads. They don't care that the students are good because of their own or their parents' effort. They have extra lesson in main subjects or perhaps the lesson on other skills. I think it's not effective school.

Usually the class is taught by ibu Anita Lie but at that time I didn’t see her. When we were doing chit chat with our friend suddenly a small (according to me) man entered the class with batik and a portable computer. He is the one who wants to share his experience as a principal I mumbled with my friend. Later I noticed he is Mr. Abdullah Sani a good principal talked by people of education. He explained some things that are very useful for our knowledge in education- as principal obviously. Not like other principal I have met in my entire life that shows their ability to threatened students, Mr. Abdullah Sani was more like a good, nice, and tender teacher; but he is.
I remember he taught us about being a good principal (well, at least that was I have got). It was surprise me because he explained something that I always miss to interpret about a principal’s figure. A good principal should not only focus on task oriented but also focus on people oriented. He also explained that both orientations should be balanced. Moreover, a good principal should not only oriented on the school result but a principal should also consider the process of teaching learning. This condition shows that a good principal should think more about the quality of the students that are graduated from his/her school more than the equity of the students who passes the final exam. The last thing that Mr. Abdullah Sani taught us is that a good principal should be close to everybody including staffs, teachers, students, and even parents. Principal’s figure should omit the old stereotypes of a scary, mean, and unbending temper.
