For me, being a principal is not an easy thing to do since it carries several roles along with the position . These roles should be applied in an integrated way with the character of a leader that the principal should have. By having the good leader characters and applying the roles, the success of the school that the principal leads will be achieved. The roles that a principal should have, in my point of view are : 1. Teacher model..this role means that a principal should be able to represent the good figure of a teacher both in the class and outside the class. It means that he / she is able to teach well and communicate with the students well. Having some teaching hours is advisable so that teacher can feel the ambiance of being a teacher in practice. 2. Facilitator...A principal should be able to facilitate the talent, ideas, opinion that his/ her teachers have. By being a facilitator, a principal will encourage all teachers perform their best for the sake of the school. Teachers will also have the feeling of being respected and not alienated 3. Mediator..Principal is the middle position between teachers and the board. There are several times when principal is pressed by both sides. It is expected that the principal is able to mediate the communication between the board and the teacher. It is not easy; at least, the principal should pass the information that both sides have wisely 4. Wise Decision Maker..when there is conflict, a principal should make a fair and wise decision so that no one feels being ignored. The impersonal orientation should also be applied to depict the role of a wise decision maker 5. Colleague.. There are times when principal becomes colleague that get along with other teachers. The hierarchical position should be put aside to give a chance familiarity and friendship. By doing it, teachers will feel close to the supervisor.
The role that the teacher has should be applied wisely depending on the time and situation. The role that is applied on the correct time and moment will lead to a good ambiance among all staffs at the school. If they feel the nice ambiance, they will enjoy their time at the school, show their loyalty and serve their best to the school.
Principal’s Roles I ever got a chance to be a principal in one national plus school in Kalimantan Barat last year. I did not take it because I thought I was not ready yet for that position. One main reason is about hours meeting and administration things. Being a principal is not an easy position, in my opinion the principal’s roles are : 1. develop the ability to communicate with and understand his/her subordinates (teachers) from other areas and cultures; communication is an important thing for a principal. If a principal is not good in communication and not be able or willing to know other’s culture, she/he will not be able to lead/give a correct direction/instruction to his/her teachers. 2. develop a strong sense of their own identity; Principal is a life-model for his/her teachers. I personally, will focus to the principal when I move to a new school. I spend extra time to observe how the principal’s activities during in school hours. 3. learn how to learn; a great principal must also learn and not only asking teachers to learn. Principal has to know something new in education first before his/her teachers. 4. ask challenging questions; be smart and competence in giving some challenging questions to his/her teachers. By doing this method, the teachers will be motivated more and more. 5. Etc We still have many principal’s roles beside those roles. As we discussed in class, the principal must be acceptance and competence ( this is also important point ) in the school. I agree with Ms. Dian, to be a school leader is not an easy thing. He/ she will be demanded to have any kind of leading skills including managing. It means that a good leader should also be a good manager. In my opinion, a principal should play several roles such as: 1. Teacher, a good principal should also be able to teach. but it does not mean that he/ she must teach. What I mean here is that if a principal is also a teacher he/she will know teacher's struggle and demands. It will also help him/her to have good relationship with students and other teachers. 2. Manager, as I have said before a good leader also means a good manager. It will be useless if a principal can lead but he/she cannot manage things. If so, the management will be chaotic. Of course it should be completed more with decision making and leadership skills. 3. Observer, I believe that there are many things happen in school. A good principal should be able to observe and know completely about it. It will also help him/her to know students' and teachers' needs, including facility, atmosphere, and many more. 4. A facilitator? Of course he/she should be, not only in materials but also talents. Sports, intelligence, arts and many other talents should be facilitated so it can develop well. 5. Servant, what I mean here is not a real house servant but, servant here means a person who can serve others and put others' need above his/hers. But remember, a principal is a very challenging position in school. Before a person can be a principal he/she should introspect him/herself whether he/she able to do so or not otherwise he/she may cause chaotic surrounding and the school's name will be ruined. KW.
Actually I have posted my first comment this morning but I do not know how it could be deleted. Principal should have a good vision on education philosophy and he should also know the goals of his school. As a leader he has a key-role in school, because his policy will affect the output of the school. In my opinion the principal should be 1. An Educator, he should not only concern on intellectual aspect but also emotional, spiritual and also physical aspects. It is better for the principal to teach so he can find by himself the real situation. By knowing it, it is very useful in making a decision, and he can also feel what his teachers feel. By teaching, he can also be a good example for the teachers how to be a good teacher. 2. A Good Manager. He should coordinate and manage all the school facilities and the human resources. He should identify the characteristic of his human resources in order to empower them to achieve the school's goal based on the facilities the school has. By using bottom-up management, the principal can start his job by digging the school's need, the students' needs and the teachers' needs from his communication with the teachers and students. These are the source to arrange the Strategic Plan which will be elaborated in Annually School Program that must be applied. 3. An innovator. The principal must be creative and innovative. He has to havea lot of ideas to find some new ways or even the short-cuts in achieving the goals. As the changing agent he should be ready with all of the changing 4. A Problem-Solver. There are many problems may arise, it can be constraints on the learning and teaching process or the disputes among the teachers and school staff. The principal should handle it wisely. He should find the solution of every problem quickly and wisely 5. A Servant. He should facilitate and accomodate the students' and the teachers' needs, he must be ready to serve his teachers and students. A good leader must be ready to serve, as Jesus Christ camt to the wordl to serve the people and not to be served.
In my opinion, a principal has many different roles. 1.As a planner. That he or she has to have plans for developing the school. He has to have a clear picture about the school’s future plan. 2.As a “bridge”. He or she has to be able to bridge different people, such as teachers, parents, students, support staff, and the community outside the school. As a bridge, he or she needs to have a good approach to different people, build trust, and communicate what’s need to be done to different sides. He or she has to be able to calm down the “flying feathers” when there is a dispute between different sides. 3.As a motivator. He or she has to be able to push people to be the best they can be. He or she has to know about people’s potentials and push them to develop their potential. 4.As a coordinator. He or she has to be able to organize people, so they can work together as a team to reach the school’s goals.
The Role of a Principal: A principal has a very important role to fulfill in their daily job duties and responsibilities. They are the guiding force which makes schools what they are today.
1.The principal is the head of the educational setting or school. 2.The principal provides guidance not only for the teachers but for the students as well. 3.The principal must monitor all activities within the school and be the leader of it. 4.The principal is responsible for fulfilling in their capacity as principal is that of hiring, firing, and disciplining teachers and staff at the school. 5.The principal is responsible for developing payroll specifications for the individuals. 6.The principal is responsible for monitoring the education and extracurricular activities of the students at the educational facility. 7.The principal is often the individual who takes care of disciplinary actions with students as well. 8.The principal will also engage with outside entities. 9.The principal must be sure that everything that deals with the smooth operation of the school is in keeping with state regulations. 10.The principal is in the best position to know what things his/her school needs and the best ways in which to obtain these things from governmental entities.
The principal of a school has a very important role in society. They are the leaders within an educational establishment who provide guidance to teachers, students, staff and members of the general community. If one can complete the aforementioned job duties effectively and possesses some of the traits mentioned above, then the likelihood that the individual will be a wonderful principal is quite great. Engaging in a career as a school principal is a fulfilling role to play in society and one that is sure to be rewarding to the individual who takes it upon themselves to do so.
I've been trying to post my comment about the principal's roles using my yahoo id. Unfortunately, it failed so I use Dian's google id.
In my opinion, there are only certain people who can be positioned as principals as they will demonstrate the significant roles that more or less influence the subordinates in doing their duties. The roles that a principal needs to have are: 1. Leader and Manager. A school is considered as an organization and of course, it has an organizational structure to help both a principal and teachers know the position and the jobs. As a principal, s/he will be in the upper level and it show his/her authority. Therefore, I regard a principal must position him/herself as a leader who is able to guide the subordinates to achieve the setting goal as shared. As a leader, a principal must know the destination to go so the subordinates will have a clear direction to pass through. Besides, a principal has to be able manage the subordinates so they can do their duties properly based on their ability. To enable him/herself managing the teachers, s/he has to know well teachers' capacity so s/he can assist them to perform greatly. 2. Mediator and problem solver. There is impossible to avoid internal conflict which happens among all elements at school such as principal and teachers, teachers and teachers or teachers and students, etc. As a principal, s/he must be able to find out the root of the problem occurred so that s/he can be able to overcome the problem. It would be great if the parties who have conflict come to see the principal to ask for any solution or probably the principal can be aware with the internal conflict happened so s/he can talk to the 'fighting' parties personally to solve the conflict itself. In this case, the principal must keep the problem confidential so the parties who have conflict will not be embarrassed. Furthermore, the principal must posses an impersonal orientation so s/he will decide what is agreed as the solution from the rational side. 3.Colleague. It will be nice if a principal can be a colleague for teachers as I have an experience how my principal position herself as a leader/superior so there is a gap between her and her subordinates. This can cause uncomfortable atmosphere because teachers do not respect her as a respected principal, but more to be a frightening one. If a principal positions him/herself as a colleague for teachers, teachers will feel freely to communicate without having a reluctant feeling since there is no gap. Above all, each of the principals has his/her own way to lead a school even though there are still pattern that s/he needs to know and posses.
My failure posting my comment using my yahoo id causes me to use Dian's google id.
In my opinion, a principal must possess a role I call as human manager role. Here, supposed that all teachers work well, a principal must be able to manage the people well. Managing here means directing them into the jobs and taking care of them as humans. While the teachers feel that they are respected and treated as human, they will respect the principal and, hereby, do their works wholeheartedly. Being a principal who is respected because teachers are afraid of him/her is a common thing, but becoming a principal who is respected because the teachers love him/her is indeed a positive thing in school. Citing from the movie "terminator salvation": human is different from machine, machine does not have feeling and emotion and tiredness of doing things over and over; while human has feelings, emotion and it needs care.....
I think a principal should accomplish two functions. First, he or she must be a competence leader. Power should be well-established due to his expertise. Second, he or she maintains good relationship with both teachers and students. It promotes liking from the subordinates which help the leaders to achieve goals.
A principal is the head of educational setting. First and foremost, a principal should have the following qualifications : A principal should : 1. have a competence , preferably a Master’s degree in education for Senior High School. 2. get through a coursework of instruction and administration 3. have had classroom teaching experience at the elementary- or secondary-school level. 4. also have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern public school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of the school. Beside the qualifications, a principal should possess favorable traits : 1.A principal should exhibit excellent leadership skills to provide guidance to his or her subordinates , students as well and to make the school the best that it possible can be. 2.Good conversational skills are another positive trait principals should possess. As he or she will be speaking with countless amounts of individuals throughout their daily job duties, it is important that the principal knows exactly how to express what he or she wants and relays this information to individuals. A principal should also be social in nature and not simply robotic in relaying information to various parties. A principal who has good conversational skills will excel in their position. 3.A principal should also have good problem solving skills as he or she will need to solve many problems during their role as principal. These problems may range anywhere from disciplinary actions for students to finding a way to fund certain school programs. A principal who has top of the line problem solving skills will find that it makes their job that much easier to carry out as they know exactly what to do should problems arise. 4.The most important thing , a principal should have integrity, fairness, and ethical behavior and should have creation and implementation of a shared school vision Beside the above traits, a principal has responsibilities such as : 1. A principal is responsible of nurturing and sustaining of a culture and instructional program conducive to learning and staff development. 2. A principal will monitor lesson plans of the teachers as well as other activities which go on in the school to ensure that the students are receiving the educational requirements and activity requirements that are necessary to provide a well-rounded learning environment for them. The principal is often the individual who takes care of disciplinary actions with students as well. 3. A principal must act as a liaison between what goes on in the school and those in the general community. He or she will meet requests from parents, school board members and government officials. 4. A principal is also an individual who has a hand in government grants and funding acquisitions. The principal is in the best position to know what things his/her school needs and the best ways in which to obtain these things from governmental entities. 5.Finally, a principal should enjoy what they do on a daily basis. One who likes their job will arguably do a better job at it. If one is a principal and dreads starting the day each morning, this sentiment will be relayed in their daily activities and negatively affect their ability to do their job.
Being a principal is like being a 'double agent'. For sure, every school has an owner, or a foundation, or a board. Then, a school will also have teachers, staff, and some other support systems such as janitors, caffetaria, etc. The interest of the foundation is sometimes (or most of the times, in some schools) the opposite of the school's 'academic' administrators (principal and teachers). This is when the 'double agent' role takes place. To the foundation, a principal is accountable to 'activate' the school as a 'profit machine' (ideally any foundation will not mention that; of course they might mention a school as, say, 'an agent of change for the society). In other side, a school principal is perceived as the 'Guardian Angel' by the school's teachers. These teachers put their 'future career', hope, (even life) on the principal's shoulder. They hope the principal will protect their well being, dignity, and stand for their rights, as teachers. To be honest, to keep the two interests in balance (the teachers' and the owner's, or foundation's) is the most important task to do. Well, we can always add the list of the principal's role under the teacher's interest, such as a motivator, a friend in need, a leader, a manager, a peace maker (or a pace maker?), a warrior of the truth (some teachers think their principal is like a 'god' who can create miracle for the sake of the 'truth', you know.), a 'master teacher', a problem solver, a soother, a protector from the storm ...(it's a never ending list, depends on how ideal you are). What I mean 'in balance' is this: sometimes a principal should be realistic, another time, idealistic. For example, we all know that all private schools need profit, let's face it (the owner's of foundation's interest). However, a principal should know when he or she has to put aside this interest, and boldly fight for the teachers' welfare (e.g. not cutting off the teachers' salary under the name of 'operational efficiency'.). In conclusion, keeping the balance between a school's owner's interest and the teachers' is the major role of a school's principal. (I should put also the parents' interest, shouldn't I. However, I think I will keep it for another discussion.)
I always dream about sitting in a big black leather seat behind a shinny big desk pointing my index finger to my subordinates. Well at least that is my vision of a boss. According to my point of view a boss in a particular school is principal. A good principal must fulfill some requirement in order to be successful in leading the school. According to my opinion I think the main role in becoming a school principal is the ability to use two main characters as a leader; a lion and a rabbit. As wild lion, the principal should be able to rule the school, maintain the subordinates, and arrange them for good sake eventhough the action requires some strict or rough statement. In the other side, a good principal must be able to be as tame as a rabbit. If the subordinate done good things or they are always follow the rules that the principal made, and then the principal should a rabbit. Moreover, in this circumstance, the principal should be able to please the subordinate. I think this character is the main stereotype of a good and surviving leader. The principal should be firm whenever it’s needed and the principal should also able to show tenderness towards his or her subordinates. When something happens the principal should switch whether as a lion or a rabbit as soon as possible in order to overcome problems or maintaining relationship between subordinates or principal to subordinates.
Being a principal carries some important things. Principal means a leader of a school which has some elements (teachers, students, administrators, janitors, and parents of students). That is why a principal should be a good model that can be a "right person on the right place". He/ she should control his/ her emotion. A principal should become a trust worthy person so every elements of the school can share or even give some critiques. It does not mean that everyone can talk freely without respect. A principal should keep good image. Besides, he/ she should be a good decision maker/ problem solver. In making decision or solving problem, a principal should ask his/ her subordinates (if it is necessary), although he/ she has the authority to do it by him/ herself. Finally, a good leader is a good servant. It means the principal as the leader not only gives command but also does something directly to motivate his/ her subordinates. Becoming a leader does not mean that always to be served.
Being a principal is a challenging job, since it is a job of leading people so that it is not easy. The important thing that we should remember that we cannot control people- their mind, emotion. What we can do is manage them.
Related to the question of principal's role, I think principal's role is so complex and some of them has been discussed, so I add some. 1. Role model for her teachers and subordinate-exemplary leader. By giving a good model in the way we act, speak, think and work and care to others then his/her subordinate and even students can learn or imitate. It is also good as what mbak Dian state that a principal must have certain competencies in teaching that will help the teachers in handling teaching problems. 2. Mediator for the board and the teachers. In my opinion a principal must be able to interpret the board's decision before applied at school whether the decision is appropriate or not to be applied at school and then how to communicate it to the subordinates-both teachers and employee. When the decision is not appropriate, he/she must be brave to discuss it with the board and give alternatives related to it. By doing this a principal can mediate the board with the teachers. Then how to communicate the needs and importance of the decision in improving teachers' competencies and professional thus their life quality. In this role, a principal must be in balance. A principal also a mediator between school's and societies. All of school activities like or dislike will be judged by people around the school. People will see whether the existence of the school benefit them or not.

First and foremost, a principal should have the following qualifications : A principal should :
1. have a competence , preferably
a Master’s degree in education
for Senior High School.
2. get through a coursework of
instruction and administration
3. have had classroom teaching
experience at the elementary-
or secondary-school level.
4. also have a thorough knowledge
of the principles and practices
of modern public school
education and the ability to
apply them to the needs of the
school.
Beside the qualifications, a principal should possess favorable traits :
1.A principal should exhibit
excellent leadership skills to
provide guidance to his or her
subordinates , students as well and to make the school the best that it possible can be.
4.The most important thing , a principal should have integrity, fairness, and ethical behavior and should have creation and implementation of a shared school vision
Beside the above traits, a principal has responsibilities such as :
