Three things that I learned from Pak Sani are:
1. Culture is not an instant product, it has to be cultivated
2. Innovations are needed to enrich our teaching
3. Put your shoes in someone's else shoes.

The first one, that culture is not an instant product, I am agree on this thing because a good and healthy culture need to be taught over and over, shown and practice over and over until it becomes someone's value. It is not an easy thing to do but if someone has a good reason behind introducing one new culture and he is constantly modeling the culture, every one will be able to see the benefit of it and they will begin to follow it. It takes time but important to do.

The second thing is also important to do because when people stop to think about new things that can be improved and done in teaching, then there will be no generations that can become history makers. History makers come from teachers who dare to innovate their teaching techniques and dare to try something new and appropriate in her class

The third thing but not the last is about putting yourself in someone's shoes. This time, i am talking about the students' shoes. as teachers, we should consider our language, whether the students will catch our explanation or not. Use the language that is appropriate to each level and also, think about the teaching techniques, ways to teach students that can raise the students' interest in the lessons. By putting our feet in others shoes, our students, we will find so many extraordinary ways to teach our students.

Three main things from Pak Sani
I really impressed with his vision about:
1. Teacher’s commitment
2. All of school individuals also as a learner
3. Change the mind set

I was impressing when he started to share about his vision about teacher’s commitment. Commitment means that teacher as a “long lasting learner” (Pembelajar Seumur Hidup). I commented that it was really important to realize that when we decided as a teacher we should able to know what education is? Who are our students? Why we teach them? It quite changed our mind that to be a teacher was not easy. It just not teach them, but also how progress we are to change our students to be a good individuals. It did not depend on quantitative aspect but also on qualitative aspect. How can we develop them with kinds of skill they have, especially that related to their soft skill. Furthermore, it became our responsibility to teach them well with other knowledge in order to prepare them in their real world-society.

Second, I agreed that as a school individuals we should improve our ability no matter how old are we. Improve means that we should learn over and over again for ourselves, especially if we really got involve with our school and the students. Innovation here was also very important. Being creative is needed by all educators. How can we make our creativity if we don’t have some innovation to develop it? That’s why we should learn every single day we have.

Finally, change the mind set was not easy enough. Several efforts might be needed by the Principal to do that. Why, maybe it because related to human’s characteristic or believes. It was quite same with our Principal has. She asked all the teachers to be able to face with some problems that related to our schools administration or students. Not all of those problems handled or decided by the Principal, but the teacher could be done it. The most important is teacher also should know about the school problems and how can they struggle to face it.

Three main things that I learned from Pak Sani are:
1.School Culture in his school
2.Teachers’ behavior and their beliefs
3.How to make a good relationship with all the members at school (principal, teachers, students, staffs).

School culture is the first thing that I learned from Pak Sani. He stated that school culture is the custom which is usually done at school. He gave the example of his school culture such as every time the students see the principal, they will greet him by kissing the principal’s hand. I think this is a good example to show that the students respect their teachers so much. Besides, schools can also create their own culture as their identity. School culture relates to trust among the members at school, innovative ideas, and chances to participate in any activities.

The second thing is teachers’ behavior and their beliefs. Most teachers nowadays have long working period maybe until 20 years, but it’s a pity that they have only a year experience in teaching. So, during 20 years, they just use the same technique while teaching (it looks like repetition all the time) and it is not good for the students also. The teacher should change their beliefs and they should be creative. No matter what their beliefs are, the teachers must do the best for the students. They can find some activities that are useful for the students so that the students will enjoy the lesson.

The last point is how to make a good relationship with all the members at school. It can be through fun activities such as workshop, out bound, and seminar. Also, giving advice can be done among the teachers. For example, each teacher can give the bad and the good side of their colleagues. To avoid misunderstanding each other, the teacher can write on a piece of paper and put it in the envelope. The point of doing this activity is that the teacher can know what their strength and their weakness. Hopefully after knowing the bad and good side of them, they dare to try something new for their life. I have never done this before, but it gives me an idea to do it in my school.

Three main things I learned form pak Sani’s sharing are : (1) educational quality of a school, (2) school culture and (3) tradition of giving praise and critic at Khadijah Elementary school.
First, an educational of quality of a school is a function of student potensial (Potensi Siswa = PS), professional ability of the teachers ( Kemampuan Profesional guru = KP), quality of the learning facility ( mutu Fasilitas Belajar = FB) and school culture (Budaya Sekolah). So the formula is :
MP = f ( PS, KP, FB, BS)
Second, there is a habit to kiss hand or salim to teachers by the students. By doing this, the teachers have a chance to ask God for opening their students’ mind and heart to accept the lesson easily. The students’ parents also be involved in innovating the school. The rules (tata tertib) of teachers and students are arranged together by them. Besides that, pak Sani has an opinion that every human is a learner, includes the teacher. So the teachers are given a book in order to be learned and then be tested. He has a slogan (yel) that is sung or said in every meeting: “ Kami satu wadah, akrab dan dinamis, ember bocor.”
Third, a habit to give praise and critic to the colleagues. I think it is a very good way to enhance the togetherness and collaborative in a team work. I have ever had this experience when I was trained in John Robert Power and then I applied it at my office. By doing that, I see an improving work climate and cooperation among my subordinates.
In conclusion, there are many good things I got from this class. The awareness for helping the needy and elderly are getting less and less among our children now, and this is the holy task of us teachers.

1. Teacher as a long life learner.
2. Reading as a mean to improve knowledge
3. Gathering regularly is his Unique School Culture

His statement that being a teacher is a long life learner. This means that if one decides to become a teacher, she must not stop learning. Because by learning she will improve her skills, get more knowledge to support her teaching style so she will not be left behind by the students. He encourages all his teacher to always be innovative and creative and support to each other and never stop learning no matter how old they are.

His culture about reading which is transferred to his teachers. It is a good idea to support the teachers to go forward by reading such books. Analyzing the books, making some reports make the teachers more qualified because through reading, the teachers will learn something which is very useful to be innovative and creative in using the right teaching styles. It is very important for the students to avoid being bored in following the class. So through reading, first, the teachers will get a lot of input to refresh their styles in teaching. Second, they also will learn how to handle the students with new method. Third, they will not be out of date in following modern technology and many other benefits which can be used in the teaching learning process.

His culture to gather the teachers once a week to build their characters. So they will be strong enough to face any kind of problems which can arise during the teaching learning process. During the gathering, he trains the teachers to be ready in accepting both positive and negative critiques from their colleagues. He assures that all the critiques they get will encourage them to be better teachers. He faces the stubborn teachers wisely, he just answers with some words if his teachers protest him. He does not use his emotion, on the contrary, he gives the reasons why he should do that.
During the gathering, first, he asks the teachers to write the good things of their colleagues, put them in each envelope which is named of each teacher. Then he reads them in front of all teachers. Second, he ask the teachers to write the bad things of their colleagues and put them in different envelope. If the good things are read, the bad things are only read by the teachers themselves at home. It makes me impress of him. How wise he is. Even he has opportunity to read the bad things, he does not want to do it. He just lets the teachers to remind their negative behavior by themselves.

caecilia mengatakan...

There is a lot that I learn from Mr.Sani’s lecture, but the ones that I value most are, first of all, that school culture which becomes the identity, unique characteristic and pride of the school is determined and approved by all school staff. The school culture must not be created by one individual as he wishes but it was set by the teachers, staff and the principal together. Everybody at school should feel comfortable with the agreed school culture and support it.
The second thing that I get from this lecture is that school culture will retain if parents are involved to support the students’ activities, and that school culture does not start by itself but it has to be made into a habit. For example: the culture of cleanliness at school must also be done at home, meaning that parents should make their children get the habit of keeping the environment clean by throwing the garbage into the dustbin.
The third thing that I learn from this lecture is that the best school culture is one that is dynamic and intimate, in which all teachers and students are encouraged to participate in every aspect of school life. Teachers and students have a good relationship and students are encouraged to make achievements in their study and sports. This is the ideal school culture that every school should have.

There are many thing that I learned from Pak Sani’s sharing. Three things that I learned from him are:
1. how to help the teachers to stand of the critics
2. how to create and build long life learning
3. how teachers and principal has confidence and believe that their school is good

Some people think that critics can improve their weaknessess in certain area. However, not all people can accept someone’s critics with happily. Critics also can discourage us to do some things. Pak Sani gave tips how the teachers deal with critics. To have teachers who are strong and stand in accepting critics., he trained his teachers. Actually the way he trained his teachers were quite simple, but it’s good way to do. He just gave small piece of paper to all teachers, and asked them to write the good and the bad thing of his/her friend that need to improve. But, at first he asked them to write the good things and the next session he asked to write the bad one. He did it continually until finally his teachers are able to deal with critics.

I agree his statement that when people decided to be a teacher, he/she is also a student. So, he/she must have habbit to learn all the time. Learning is a long life. Not all people have this habbit and Pak Sani creates this environment in his school. He started to give a book and gave time to read. After some times, he asked them to share what they read and learned from the book. Even our school provides many books in the library but the teachers do not have that habbit, it will not work. So, school needs to create the culture. He also sets up time when teachers have to re-charge their selves. He does it once a week. So, teachers also come up with new creativity and innovative.

Wherever we work, we have to believe that the place we work is a good place. At least, if the place is not good then we do our best to make good because we work there. This is what Pak Sani did. He sends three of his children to go to his school. He has good confidence and believe that his school is good, that’s why he sends his children to his school. By giving this example, he wants to ask his teachers that they have to believe that their school is good.

Thamrin mengatakan...

The aspects that I learned from Pak Sani are creating learning environment, having someone criticized with the soft way, and friendly to everyone.

Creating a good learning environment is very important because we as teachers cannot stop learning. Teachers have to be endless learners since they are teaching students and the development of technology has grown rapidly. Besides, teachers will be able to share something they know to other teachers especially the new teaching methods so that they can teach well. According to Pak Sani, he always buys some new books to teachers and they will learn it. Next, they are usually given the test and anyone who did not pass the score must learn again. Anyone who can get the better result can get another book to read again. In fact, this way can make teachers want to learn and they can influence the students to learn about the new things and they will not limit themselves to the lesson they get. Moreover, one thing that I really appreciate from Pak Sani is when he instructed to all teachers to give the assignment to the students’ parents that they need to score their children’s attitude. Actually, it is really worth because the children not only learn about the lesson from school, but also learn to have good attitude especially to parents, and God. Therefore, I thought that I am in line to Pak Sani’s way to give assignment to their parents so that the children will be good people in the future.

In addition, Pak Sani explained that being a leader is not an easy job because it will deal with many problems especially their own staff. Usually, the staff especially the senior personnel is quite difficult to be handled. For example; when Pak Sani firstly held the position as a new headmaster, he got problem with the senior staff. The senior staff said “You are still young and inexperienced. How come you want to control the senior.” But Pak Sani had the other way to handle by reporting to the foundation staff. He did not want to argue because once he argued, it would make the situation become not comfortable. After being reported, the situation became normal again. Next, he did not consider whether the teachers are senior or not. What he believed is that teachers must develop themselves and follow the rules approved together.

Next, Pak Sani has told that leaders need to build the relationship among others especially their staff. He said that he sometimes had tour together with his staff. Besides, he also likes asking all the teachers to criticize each others by writing on the small piece of paper about their bad behavior. Before his staff criticized each other, he had others to tell about each other kindness. After that, he asked all teachers to write each other about his friends’ weakness and opened it at home. The reason why everyone must open it at home is his family would easily calm him down if he was mad. Also, Pak Sani always reminded all the teachers that all the critics their friends mentioned were for their own good so there was not any hard feeling. I think what Pak Sani did is quite good because he can avoid the misunderstanding between the teacher and himself if he wants to criticize.

Therefore, those three aspects that Pak Sani said are quite effective for a new leader since being a leader must face a lot of critics and challenges. As Prof. Anita Lie illustrated about the monkeys, the leader is like a monkey climbing the tree and seen his butt. So being a leader will be the easiest target to critics. However, Pak Sani as a headmaster could face all the problems and lead the school wisely.

I did not attend the previous lecture when the class invited a principal of SD Khadijah. According to all my friends that his experiences in handling a school is very valuable for them. Unfortunately I was absent at that time because I was sick. But, here I want to try to get 3 things that impressing me which I concluded through the story of my friends.
The three things that impressing me are:
1. His commitment about his decision in becoming a teacher. He is aware of his commitment that as a teacher he has to improve his skill so as he can be able give his best
knowledge to his students. It means that teacher should learn for a long of his life.
2. His vision in creating qualified graduations. His students should be completed with the good mental, aptitude, discipline, responsibility. He also concerns on the soft skill for his students. It means that his students should have social and ethic responsibility.
3. His opinion about culture of school. He proposes that each school should have its own culture. Because, It shows the identity of the school that brings feeling of proud among of the members of school. One of the culture is the existence of trust among of the member of the school.
That’s all about what I can conclude from the story of my friends about Mr. Abdullah Sani. I am sorry if it is not perfect because of my absence.

Mr. Sani is a great principal and teacher. He has a lot of experience dealing with school, principal ship, teachers, and culture. From his sharing last week, I learn that:
1. School culture is built and developed through tough, complicated ways.
A good school is not only seen through its quantitative aspects (how many successful graduates are produced by the school, how many students are there, and so on), but also through its qualitative aspects (how they behave in society, how they deal with problems, etc.) To build a good school with its great qualitative aspects that certain school should has outstanding culture which can impress others. There are so many aspects in building a school’s culture, such as: involving and encouraging parents to continue the program that the school has at home; building trust among teachers and staff; appreciating ideas from different perspectives; supporting teachers to achieve their best; and others.
2. Build good relation among teachers and staff. To create the culture, the teachers and staff should work together in a unity. To create a good working environment, they should have good relationship. Mr. Sani told us about the habits in his school that can be good ideas to be applied in schools to build the relationship among teachers and staff.
3. Teacher should be willing to make changes. Every teacher should be awaken from his/her stagnant thought. They should be encouraged and trained to develop themselves for a better condition. Mr. Sani told us about things we can do to address someone’s mistakes without hurting their feeling or without creating other problems.

Yannik Herawati mengatakan...

Three things that I learned from Pak Sani’s sharing are the positive school culture, teaching innovations and school belief. First, his school has the positive school culture. I ca be seen from the way the students respect the principal. I think it is not easy to find schools in which the students are not scared of the principal. I find out that most students run away when they meet the principal at school, but the students of this school kiss his hands instead of running away from him. Another amazing school culture is the way he runs meetings at school. He tries to share ideas and vision with all of the teachers. Second, the teachers are encouraged to be innovative and creative. The teachers will not stop learning and improving themselves. The students will not feel bored and can also be more creative. The last thing is the school belief. The believe that students come to school not for knowledge but they also they also need to build the students’ character because they need it for their future life. The technique of character building that he applies at school is also amazing because the school involve the parents by doing the day by day character cards. I think I will try to apply this technique if I become a school principal.

wayan k mengatakan...

I learn a lot from pak Sani’s sharing. First, creating a positive school culture is important. He told us that to create a positive school culture, it does not only need an involvement of the members of the school but also from the parents. Moreover, respect and care for all members of the school as well as the parents are needed to build a positive school culture. Second, maintain a good relationship among the members of the school which is called social skills in which that we are able to manage our emotional interactions. People who have this kind of social skills will be able to maintain relationships well and adapt to variety of social situations. The example given by Mr Sani is that when he is trying to maintain a good relationship among the teachers. There is a way how to tell somebody about their mistakes without creating misunderstanding. The teacher can give a comment to other colleague about their strength and weakness by writing down a comment in a piece of paper then putting it in envelope. Third, innovations are needed to improve our teaching and the quality of the students. Innovation is done when there has not been sufficient encouragement in the past. As a teacher, we are willing to take a risk and face difficulties when we are going to innovate our teaching. We should open to the new ideas and also give constructive criticism in order to improve our teaching in better ways.

Three things I learned from Pak Sani:
First, I like the way he creates the habit in commenting teachers including himself by using a piece of paper, by praising other's positive side in front of the members and criticize each other personally. For the criticize part, I guess it works very effective, since most of the people don't like to be criticized directly but by reading the take home papers they get, it will be useful for their self-reflection.
Second, he doesn't only plant the knowledge for the students but also the good characters. and the nice thing about this is he involves the parents to help the school checking the students' daily activities at home.
Third, I like his integrity. he really believe in his school that it is the best. He shows it by sending all of her children to that school. his illustration was right, if we (the one that "has" the school) don't believe in it, how can we convince others.

dian marifianti mengatakan...

I would like to say thank you for Bu Anita who invited Pak Sani in our class. The things that I learned from Pak Sani are

1.The Positive culture at the school
Every school or organization has culture, the positive culture depend on the members There are many good culture at Khadijah, such as respect to the elders and praying together. The teachers try to apply the positive culture for the students during the class .
In relation to that, the teacher and the parent work together to create the positive culture outsides school like a discipline form for parents. The parents fill the blank on the form.In result, the teachers can monitor the students outsides the school
I think this is very good example how to create the positive culture not only at school but also at home. Even it need commitment from the parents and the student but this is a good start to create a positive culture.
2.Collaboration the members at the school
Pak Sani told, that the members of the school design the rules of teacher together. also the teachers and headmaster share what kind of the rules that they want. More over, they also design what kind of the punishment when there is teacher who break the rules.
When they collaborate to design the rules and punishment, consequently, they must obey it.
I think it is very useful for the teachers, since they learn how to make the rules and responsible what they have discussed. Also, it can maintain the close relationship between the teachers.
3.Working periods VS Working experiences
I think this is very interesting, when Pak Sani told, that one of his teacher has 20 years of working period but her working has not improved dramatically. In other word, her WP ≠ WE
I think, the teacher should learn more, since a teacher is learner. When she does not have creativity and knowledge to change the way of her teaching, Her students will be bored. Moreover, the students will not understand the materials that he explained.
A teacher who always learn, he can teach the student not only based on the books, he can add from any learning resources. So that, the students will interested and understand with the materials
I believe, when he always learns, the students will be motivated to learn in class.
The formula WP = WE not only for a teacher, but also a employee. Every company or institution expect that the employee should improve her capability.

THE THREE THINGS WHICH ARE VERY NEEDED BY

THE SCHOOL STAFF, TEACHER AND STUDENTS

Written by DEWAYANTI K. 8212707019

The three things that I learned from Mr.Sani’s sharing are :
School culture has to be maintained by the school staff and students in order to create a nice and hospitality of the school environment. For example : before entering the school building ,the students have to shake hands with their teachers one another in order to develop sense of belonging among them. School culture is very needed also to keep the relationship between teacher and student because during school hours in the morning till afternoon students belong to the teacher’s children ( it means not a real children) that is why as a teacher he or she has to be close with students to make the students safe, admitted as a child, respected, and loved by their teacher. This thing is the most important from the three criteria how to develop sense of respected, honoured and possessed. Why is it needed in school this kind of criteria? As we know that nowadays the young generation is suffering from degradation moral so as a teacher, he or she has to be good enough to educate the students and apply the moral value among them by giving a good model.
As a teacher in elementary school, he or she has to be creative to make a fresh and innovation teaching material in the class during the teaching learning process. As you see that they are still kids in elementary school therefore they need something interesting or attractive to stimulate their brain to absorb the new things from the teacher or dig their mind with the new things happening in this world.. Not only the teacher has to be innovative and creative in teaching learning process but as a student, he has to involve in many subjects, skills, other achievement progress to make them getting better and better so that they can join in every competition in this world
As a teacher we are not allowed to give the students freely move. It means that during the test, the students are not allowed to cheat, asking for help and having their own homework book. If the teacher still gives them the chance authomatically they are not discipline anymore or may be the teacher can frighten them by saying ‘if you cheat during the test, you will get a curse from the God

I was very surprised what Mr. Sani discussed last week. The education quality of Indonesia will rise up if all principals, teachers, and state apparatus of education sector have an analogous intelligence with Mr. Sani’s. As an educationalist, he has changed behavior, teaching technique and culture of the teachers, students and the schools. Even, He has considered what he is going to do if there is a special student (physical defect) in the school because every person has the same right in the educational field.

Changing behavior. He has supported all teachers to reform their minds in teaching and learning process. A teacher or principal must accept all criticism because no one enjoys being criticized but a student teacher or principal must be able to accept constructive criticism and make changes in his teaching procedure. He or she must review his or her teaching and evaluate his own efforts. Mr. Sani gave some papers to all teachers to write the character of each (weakness and goodness).
Changing teaching method. As we know that he had led two schools. Although there are two school in different location he lead he can change method of teaching writing of the student. Not only the students he has changed but also teachers of the school. That is to learn how to write essay or story well. As Mr Sani said that a teacher must be able to put in the picture to students in front of class and ask them to imagine a place by closing eyes. That is a good way for teachers who are teaching in elementary school or even in kindergarten.
Culture “sekolah akrab dan dinamis.” This is a motto he has taken. It means that there is a good relationship between teachers and students, and a support of the students to develop and gain finest achievement. So there is a balance in teaching and learning process. Not only students that have to expand the knowledge but also all teachers have to do it, such as teaching method, technique or and materials for students. So, all teachers must open eyes to get new information to develop their selves, students and the school where they work.

Three things I learnt from Pak Sani are:
1. His unique technique (using papers to share or discuss things) in order to change teachers’ behavior.
As I know… having the same way to hold a discussion is very boring; however, according to Pak Sani’s story, he is always successful with his paper thing. Until now I always have this question in my mind: how can he make this same technique not boring?
2. Teachers never stop learning.
He mentioned about being a teacher, we must not satisfied with what we have got. We must keep learning, and a good school must have long life learners as the teachers.
3. The importance of having a sense of belonging and building confidence towards our own school.
When we work in a school, we must learn to “own” it. When we are able to have the sense of belonging, then we will automatically do our best to make our school the best school. At last when we see our students’ achievements, we will start to have confidence that in fact our school is very good. If we are confident that our school is very good, then we will automatically give good performances to everyone, every time, and everywhere. Then other people will also see our school as a very good school.

On Pak Sanni presentation, I found that school organization just like others management organization; a company. The school leader needs to treat his or her teacher in same frame which a company leader treat his or her sub ordinate. Teachers also need to enrich their self, together with their college.
Teacher image has been change. Old day, a teacher was so powerful, all students afraid and learn just like the teacher said. But through Pak Sanni explanation, that change gets main frame in my mind. I have some experiences before, but I just get the explanation now.
The last thing that I am found, our curriculum needs improvement. I think thematic curriculum is interesting to apply; even this choice has several consequences.
