LASKAR PELANGI VS FOUR PHILOSOPHIE OF EDUCATION

The fourth philosophies of education is linking each other, it could not be separated. I think Laskar Pelangi film is already present the fourth of philosophies of education.
The film tries to transmit the story from the novel, weather the film is not detail as the novel but it was.

Progressivism
Education is not product but process, the curriculum must be tailored to the learner

Each detail in Laskar Pelangi is simple but in rich value.

From the setting of the film – the nature, the actor and actress – taken from the Blitong itself (as major character) and also from professional and senior actor/actress (as minor character) both of them the major and the minor character could collaborate successfully.

The other reality, from the film itself, because of the poorness students of SD Muhammadiah-Blitong used no uniform, no shoes, no modern media (they used lidi to count not calculator) and without strict schedule they learn under pressure, so simple and naturally, they study outside, they learn from the nature.

“itu namanya pelangi, terjadi karena pantulan sinar matahari yang mengenai titik hujan, warnanya ada merah, jingga, kuning, hijau, biru, nila dan ungu-mijikuhibiniu”

Parennialism
Base on the theory of parennialism mention that school must disipline the mind by teaching reasoning and persuit of truth, a high academic clssical.

Although, they are poor, they consistently study by their own way.
Bu Muslimah, loving, tender, patient and smart frightens teacher used drill technique to increase her student’s ability.

Reconstructionism
When we talk about reconstruct, this film also tries to reconstruct. Where the school to be a place for integrating social change, in other word that we change society by starting in the school.

Laskar palangi is about inspiring teacher and her 10 students in Kampung Gantong-Blitong, the poor condition does not dampen their high spirit and hope for better future.

Other example; When Lintang should left school because of his family problem but his dream still alive till his daugter grow up

Pak Harfan also one of the character who try to reconstruct point of view of the children by saying “Berusahalah memberi sebanyak-banyaknya bukan menerima sebanyak-banyaknya”

Laskar Pelangi is great watching and reading for those who searching the meaning of life itself and to encourage hopeless people.

I am sure that after watching or read Laskar Pelangi a lot of people/students motivated by this film, to do something for their future.

Lintang: “Kau tahu aku anak tertua, adikku tige, ayahku pergi melaut sendirian, sebagai anak tertue mestinya aku membantu ayak melaut, tapi apa? Ia menyuruhku pergi ke sekolah, karena dari sinilah kita mengejar cite-cite kite”

Essentialism
Start from the meaning of essentialism that school is a place to transmit our cultural heritage, Laskar pelangi show us to be aware that our culture is rich enough

Presented by Mahar, he is an eccentric actress, Bu Mus trust him and let him to be the coordinator of august 17th festival, he show how attractive our culture, and encourage us to be more creative in any condition with confidance he said “…serahkan saja dengan Mahar dan alam” finally, everyone proud of them.

Laskar Pelangi is a famous novel also movie which tells us about education's role in our life. Laskar pelangi is based on the true story. Andrea hirata wrote this story to show how important the education is. We have to respect our teacher, because without teacher we can't feel the benefits of education in our life.

Laskar Pelangi is the 10 students of Muhammadiyah School in Belitong. They have the heroic spirit in their study, that's why, Mrs.Mus also the headmaster still want to defend them although the school is not worth to be placed again.

According to the 4 philosophies of education, Laskar pelangi is worth to be the Perennialism philosophic foundation. Why I choose this kind of philosophy? Because we can see one of the characteristic of perennialism is "Students should study the great works of literature, philosophy, history and science in which men through the ages have revealed their greatest aspirations and achievements." Mrs.Mus teaches them the basic subjects that are not the imitation of life but a preparation for it. They learn truths which are more important than any they could find by pursuing their own interests or dipping into the contemporary scene. They are taught by unchanging curriculum. They should study English, History,Science, mathematics, and so on. It can build their basic knowledge.

Mrs.Mus have trained them to show their creativity on the Independence day Carnaval,so they can learn about art in dancing and singing. Mrs.Mus also trained them to be success in "Cerdas Cermat Competition" and finally tey have done teir best and get the trophy!
So it can be councluded that they can be expert in Science also art. That's Perennialism!

Laskar Pelangi is a novel and movie which tell us about the story of 10 students in SD Muhammadiyah Gantong, Belitong. Through this story we will follow the journey of these 10 students to learn about life and pursuing their dream.
In my opinion, this story can be considered as perenialism. The reason why I said this because I think the basic principles of perenialism can be found in this story.

Despite differing environments, human nature remains the same everywhere; hence, education should be the same for everyone.
We can see clearly that education is same for everyone since the beginning of the story. One of the students in SD Muhammadiyah Gantong is a bit “special,” but everyone treat him as a normal person and he also got the same education like the others.

Since rationality is man’s highest attribute, he must use it to direct his instinctual nature in accordance with deliberately chosen ends.
Although Harun is a bit “special,” bu Mus tried her best to give him the best education he could get, she even make special exam for him, so he can express his true self.

Education is not an imitation of life but a preparation for it.
Everything they had learned from their school is the foundation to reach their dreams. For example, in the epilogue, Mahar who interested in art and music become an artist when he was grown up.

The student should be taught certain basic subjects that will acquaint him with the world’s permanencies.
Bu Mus taught all subjects to her students, like mathematics, science, arts, religion, and so on; she even let them study through the nature, so they can respect and understand about the nature.

Students should study the great works of literature, philosophy, history, and science in which men through the ages have revealed their greatest aspirations and achievements.
They had learned that education is important, and with education they can conquer the world. Almost all of the students in this story realize that and they have tried their best, although they face some problems they still not give up.

“Laskar pelangi” is a great movie. By seeing this film we can see how important education in our life. Although their parents didn’t have enough money to take their children to school, but they still want their children became educated people. Luckily, there was still SD Muhammadiyah that wanted to accept them, so they could still get an education.

I think there is a reconstructionism inside “Laskar Pelangi”. Reconstructionism means the school should be a place for instigating social change. We change society by starting in the school. In Laskar Pelangi, there were two kinds of social status that visible clearly. The first was the high status. Students in the high status could go to a good school. They could wear uniform and study well with good facilities because they had money. But the second, students from the low status, they couldn’t go to a good school because they didn’t have enough money for paying the school fee. But fortunately, there were still some kind peoples like Bu Mus and Pak Harfan that wanted to make a school for students who didn’t have money. Although they didn’t have money to pay, but education was still very important. The educated people will get a better degree in this world than uneducated people.

Beside that one, there was still one example of reconstructionism from “Laskar Pelangi”. Social status is very important, especially in this hard life. When there was a “Cerdas Cermat” competition in Belitong, Lintang that was a very smart boy could answer the hard mathematic questions perfectly without counting it before. But when his last answer was different from the judge’s answer, the judges said that from the first time, they had suspicious that Lintang was cheating. In fact, actually his answer was right and the judge’s answer was wrong. Luckily, the teacher from the other school counted it and said to the judges that they made a mistake. Lintang’s group finally won the competition and made Bu Mus proud of them.

What a touching film!! Two thumbs up for Andrea Hirata. Laskar pelangi is the first Indonesian movie that I have ever seen in the theatre. Talking of philosophy of education, four of them are connected: perennialism, progressivism, essentialism, and reconstructionism. But for me the reconstructionism suits best with what the principal and Bu Muslimah have done.
Reconstructionsim philosophy of education→ the school should be a place for instigating social change. We change the society by starting in the school. We can see reconstructionism in the film when both the principal and Bu Mus decided to run the poor SD Muhammadiyah with only 10 students in it. We could see their efforts and struggle for teaching those 10 students. They could proof that eventhough they were not so lucky as the rich elementary school, their achievements could not be underestimated. They had won the competition held on August 17 and also in “cerdas cermat.” In cerdas cermat we could see Bu Mus effort in teaching them. She even made new uniforms for those who joined the competition and taught them math, music, history and everything related to “cerdas cermat” competition.

"Philosophy of Education in Laskar Pelangi"

Reconstructionism (Philosophy of Education)
Education is to change the society’s perspective about lifestyle, mystic, politic, etc., starting from ourselves by changing life pattern through education in school, then persuading our families and finally the wide society. Education must lead to a profound change in the minds of men. Society must be transformed through the education to a new vision of a life in common.
Laskar Pelangi: Page 344 – Lintang successfully opened his friends’ minds to have a chance to be different from most people did. Without looking at their weaknesses, they tried to think positive (not just to be unskilled labourers).

In school, education causes students’ creativities grow to change the society. They get a chance to think hard to have a revival. To build a social and educational program that will help resolve their longings, reduce their immoralities, and release their humane potentialities.
Laskar Pelangi: Page 228,246 – Through education, Laskar Pelangi looked for creative ideas and an all-out attempt. Finally, they found they had big potentialities that people never knew.
By schooling, students have regenerated thought. They should dare to be different and be able to describe values objectively with the true and scientific evidences rather than “sok tahu”.

The importance of the behavioral sciences is that they enable us to discover those values in which men most strongly believe.
Laskar Pelangi: Page 390,391 – Societeit team successfully broke the myth with the objective evidences and scientific logic.

LASKAR PELANGI
Laskar Pelangi movie is a very good educated movie. The whole story of Laskar Pelangi movie is according to the Laskar Pelangi novel. It tells about the spirit of two teachers that are Bu Muslimah and Pak Harfan, and 10 students (Ikal, Lintang, Mahar, Kucai, Borek, Harun, Syahdan, Trapani, Sahara, and Akiong) who struggled to defend their school. Their school is an Islamic school that is the only one which still exists. The spirit of Bu Muslimah, Pak Harfan and the Laskar Pelangi can be a good model for us. We have to follow their spirit to reach education as high as we can.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LASKAR PELANGI WITH PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
If we have read the novel or even seen the movie of Laskar Pelangi, we can relate the Laskar Pelangi to the philosophy of education. The four philosophies of education have their own definitions. I think the Laskar Pelangi is fit to the reconstructionism. I can say so because they show that the school has changed the society around them. The school has given many good effects for the students. Even the spirit of the students has inspired all of the people around them.

Philosophy of education that is applied by Bu Muslimah and the principal, Pak Harfan is RECONSTRUCTIONISM, which means the school as a place for instigating social change, in which the society is changed by starting in school.

In the movie Laskar Pelangi, the social status becomes one of the most important thing in Bangka Belitong. The Moslem's school which is only handled by pak Harfan and bu Muslimah: Muhammadiah, was a poor school that only has a small and messy-look building, or we can say that as a small room, consists of only 10 students who are known as Laskar Pelangi. They are always underestimated just because they are poor. They don't wear uniforms and shoes just like better schools there, and that's why they are looked strange when they come to the rich school where they use to join the final test. The poor and the rich are always distinguished. The rich are always looked better, and the poor is the opposite.

That is why, through having education in school, even in the poorest school, Pak Harfan and Bu muslimah with Laskar Pelangi never give up and keep struggling to prove and change the view that says "The poor don't deserve better education and same social status."

Two parts that proves their efforts are when Bu Muslimah trained the 10 students in preparing themselves for the Educational Quiz (Cerdas Cermat) in which Laskar Pelangi win the competition and go home with a trophy and certificates ; and when Mahar who always listens to the radio and gets at least a bit education through it, plays role as the choreographer to his friends as the preparation to join the carnival on The Independence Day. Although their performance are laughed by many people and seems a bit strange, they finally get great applause from the audience and the other contestants, which means they have successfully given their best performance and brought another trophy as the symbol of their success.

Through that, they have completely shown that we, human beings are all the same, and even though they are poor in their society, they are extremely rich in education and knowledge. By having rich education and knowledge, Laskar Pelangi have changed their social status to a much better position.

i've already read the novel of Laskar Pelangi and also watched the movie but, i prefer read the novel because the novel explain more detail than watched movie. the story give impression to the audience and readers. by following the story we can learn many things about behavior for example;the attitude of lintang, a child who has a big spirit everyday to go to school for getting new knowledge to hope he is to be clever and get a good job not to be a coolie of PN (Perusahaan Timah). Despite his house is too far from school, we can see his sacrifice which is very big. He have to riding his bycycle to go to through along journey from his house to school and back again from his school to home. So, According to the four philosophy of education. its has connection with progressivism because Lintang always try to develop himself in getting new knowledge of the theacher by going to school everyday.

"Philosophy of Education in Laskar Pelangi"

What an amazing and great movie!

LASKAR PELANGI

In my opinion, the philosophy of education used by Bu Mus is Progressivism.
Progressivism against perennialism. in perennialism, education should be the same for everyone. I don't agree with it, because I believe that everyone is created with their own characteristic and talent.
In progressivism, a child should learn in his interest, so everyone is different. however, this doesn't mean that the child should be allowed to follow every prompting of his own desires. he still need guidance and direction from theacher. this is really understood by Bu Mus. She gave chance for student who like music to lead his friend in giving performance. she also understood that Lintang is a very smart student and she believed he could give win to his school in cerdas cermat competiton.
Progressivism also believe that schoold should encourage cooperation rather than competition. Bu Mus brought her class into togetherness, so even they had graduated from the school, they still remember ecah other and remember the life education given by Bu Mus and Pak Harfah.

Laskar Pelangi is the greatest Indonesia's movie that I've ever seen in the theater...
Give a big applause to the author!!! Andrea Hirata, you're very great.. ^^,
By watching this film, we can get a lot of lesson of life. And how to respect something that we have..
The movie tells us that even poor people can get knowledge even not in a good and glamour school...

Related to the philosophies of education, the best is that RECONSTRUCTION...
Why I choose that? because in this philosophy tell us that school should be a place for instigating social change...
In Laskar Pelangi, the students learn a lot in school and from their teacher "Bu MUS"..
Even their school is ugly, they go to school everyday..Support one another!!!
Especially in character Lintang, he still go to school even his house is very far from school.
No one can lose their spirit..
Bu Mus also give a lot of things to her students. Help them in every occassion....

In my opinion, Laskar Pelangi is the most interesting and amazing movie in Indonesia that I’ve ever seen. I believe that this movie can improve Indonesia become well because the movie gave us know about what an important education. It also asked student or people in Indonesia must study hard and never give up because we still have many chances in our life. I am very proud with Bu Mus because she decided to run the poor school named SD Muhammadiyah with her 10 students. Bu Mus taught her students how to be honest in their life. And in this movie there are many competitions; one of the competitions is “cerdas cermat.” This “cerdas cermat” competition made everyone in there realized that poor school can has best and smart students than other students in a good school. So all of people didn’t look at down with them. We can learn a good lesson from this movie because it has many kinds of good thing. In this movie, it has four philosophies of education, but the most is the reconstructionism because this movie showed that the school has changed the society around it. The school is very useful because it has given many kinds of good effect for the students. However it was the poorest school in there. But it also can help some of SD Muhammadiyah’s students to get their dream and made them same with other students.

We can find Reconstructionism in “Laskar Pelangi”. It tells us how we can improve our point of view of life, have socialization each other, change our mind to get better solution by discussing the problem and keep the responsibility. These things can be started at school. For example, when they see a carnival cup in the cupboard, they think to add another one. Fortunately, a few days later, there is a quiz contest. They take apart in it. They discuss seriously how to bring the good name for their school, and of course, to be the winner. They study together with Bu Muslimah. Finally, SD Muhammadiyah becomes the winner. They are very happy.

Laskar pelangi also gives a lesson that poor students have the same right to get education. It is proved by SD Muhammadiyah students. They have high spirit in getting education whatever happened in their family and environment. They realize that education is very important in reaching a better life in the future. For example, when Pak Harvan (one of the teachers in that school) is dead, Bu Muslimah gets depressed. She does not go to school for about 5 days. Day by day, the students wait and wait her in the classroom. They want to get lessons eventhough there is no teacher.

Another example can be seen in Lintang, one of the main characters. He tries to come to school on time eventhough the distance is very far. He is patient waiting for the crocodile crosses the way he passes everyday.

By watching or reading Laskar Pelangi, we can conclude that smart brain can not be measured by how we get dressed, performance, lifestyle, etc. The most important thing is how to have high spirit in getting education and changing ourselves into a better life in the future. It is a great story! ^_^

Laskar pelangi

This novel or the film is real experiences of Andre Hirata. He is a good writer to write his experiences when he was a kid. He studied in SD Muhammadiyah Gantong in Belitong Sumatra.
My opinion is the focus of the novel or the movie is a teacher in remote place; although, actually Andre Hirata’s lives himself, he described it in his first novel.
I see the headmaster of SD Muhammadiyah Gontang has good purpose to sustain the school. Even though he only get ten students. There are three teachers and one of them is the headmaster. The school has a principal to teach a good spiritual of personality and does not chase bright of intelligence but their focus is heart. They teach value of living through their teaching. They are the headmaster, Mr. Bakrie and Ms. Muslimah. But the best teacher in the school is Ms. Muslimah for ten students. They call this group is Laskar Pelangi. Ms. Muslimah named her ten students because they great students and they have amazing spiritual in their heart like rainbow. We can see how they struggle a good education for poor people in that area but the society and the government doesn’t agree or support them. There are many poor people than rich people.
After the headmaster was dead, Ms. Muslimah must face the condition alone. She has to substitute him and then one of the headmaster’s friends helps and accompanies her to sustain the school. Because they see ten students still survive and study by themselves. Lintang is as a teacher to teach his friends because he is a science genius person. Ms. Muslimah has been succeed supports her students to express their ability, good attitudes and love. Ms. Muslimah is great teacher with her sacrifice for education, even though sometimes she doesn’t get her salary. She loves her students, although they are poor children. So that I have a conclusion that bu Muslimah had praticed progressivism in the philosophy of education. Her teaching for poor children is her way to reach her dreams.
The novel and the movie want to tell that everyone has to get education even though they are poor people. Education is going to free people from the stupidity so that the school should able to help poor children to get good education. The novel let us to want to sacrifice for other people without benefits. Would you like to be a teacher in remote land?

" LASKAR PELANGI'S MOVIE "
Wow!! Laskar Pelangi is a Great Film. The story is about the reality of process education in one place in Belitung,SDN Mohammadiyah Gantong, exactly.
The first time I watched the movie, I was really proud with the Movie makers Riri Reza and the writter Andrea Hirata. Because in this modern's era, the movie makers still care about the condition of education in the that area, in the isolated area, exactly. I was moved to watch the story of the unfortunate. I was really proud with the childrens in that movie, also about the teachers in SDN Mohammadiyah Gantong, Belitung.

The Philosophy of Education in Laskar Pelangi :
I think Reconstructionism is the philosophy of Laskar Pelangi, because the school should be a place for instigating social change. We change society by starting in the schools. The school in Laskar Pelangi in SDN Mohammadyah only have 10 students( Lintang, Mahar, and others) 3 teachers, bad building, and didn't use the formal uniform. But in Laskar Pelangi we could see that They were very enthusiasm to study, to teach and to help each other. Although they very different with other formal school, but they could show their achievements. They won 'CERDAS CERMAT' competition, they won THE CARNAVAL in August 17. It was some proof that the good school not only about the good place or the good teacher or good uniform. Also about Bu Mus and Pak Harfan, they kept loyal with SDN Mohammadyah. Their strunggle was very Fantastic, They never give up to prove SDN Mohammadyah have a good qualities than others school.

Laskar Pelangi is The Best Movie!!
