Questons for Child Education

1. Why is the title of the movie, "I, Not Stupid"?
2. In what ways do adults in that movie fail to understand children?
3. What lessons have you learned from that movie?

1. The titling, which deliberately uses incorrect English grammar to represent poor mastery of the language, represents the crying out of those children in the movie who’s been put into a jar with 2 labels on it: “The EM3 Students” and “The Stupid Kids”.

2. First,
They give up to the judgment on their children by the academic constitution and the society. With the fact that their children belong to EM3, some of the parents believe that their kids are really stupid and don’t have any valuable talent.

Second,
The parents, having no trust on their children’s capability, dominate the growth of the kids without giving enough space for their independence of mind and self-reliability.

Third,
The wealthy parents wrongly believe that life motivation, as well as happiness, should always be given to their children through material gifts. These parents can’t ever think of other ways such as: social-relationship building, open-minded dialogues, and many others.

3. Lessons that I have got from the movie:
- Every person, in this case a kid, must have a talent. Parents should be wise enough not to underestimate their kids just because, for example, academic failure. It takes love, patience and perseverance to discover the treasure beneath a child.
- A child’s behavioral growth depends mostly on his/her parents’ ways of raising him/her. From what is shown in the movie, an over-spoiled child is in a great danger of not earning enough self-reliance, social capability, and independence of mind. The kid will grow pretty much incompletely.

Comment on Laskar Pelangi:
It is a very touching novel. The story is very creative and interesting to read. The author, Andrea Hirata, in this novel is told as a little boy named Ikal. he and his friends in SD Muhammadiyah form an association named Laskar Pelangi which has 10 members. they are so spiritful in their life and fighting to reach their goal. It is a must-read-novel!
What I like, they seem to always have a cooperative play. They always did their activities together in group. They always encourage each other even to their disabled friend, Harun.
It is very important for their development since they can cooperate in working toward a common end.

laskar Pelangi:

There are many perspectives about the meaningful of life, some of them can we find through the story of “laskar pelangi” which is focused on the life in Belitung. The main character is Ikal, a child who has to survive in his poor family condition. However, the poverty of Ikal’s family does not keep his father to give ikal a proper education. Ikal was sent to a school, which is far from standard of education. The school has only ten students; Ikal, Mahar, Lintang, Trapani , Samson, Sahara, Kucai, Harun, Syahdan and A Kiong. They learned many important things in their life, more than learning how to read, count or even being a champion. “Life is for giving as many as you can, but not for receiving” a sentence that come out from Pak Harfan, the headmaster of Muhammadiyah elementary school, belitong. This sentence inspired and encouraged them in their life. On the other hand, their childhood is very colorful, there are laughs, tears, fears, or even a big responsibility to take care of his (lintang) siblings. These ten children are called “the warrior of the rainbow”. They love to play on the hill steep where they can slide on the palm stem and watching at the rainbow. They also play under rain, in the mud, and swimming in the river. They do not have PSP, NDS, or other expensive tools just like the toys nowadays. However, they enjoy play with nature, traditionally.

Andrea Hirata’s novel: Laskar Pelangi, is one of the most inspiring book that I’ve ever read. My favorite one is actually Sang Pemimpi, the second book of Tetralogy Laskar Pelangi, and I’m waiting for the last book, Maryamah Karpov. Anyway, I really thanked to Andrea Hirata for finally creating these novels for Indonesia. When lots of people in Indonesia nowadays lose their hope and willing to grab their dreams, this book came up to share the spirits of ten ordinary children, the Laskar Pelangi, from a small city, Belitong, to grab their simple dream: Go to School.
In Laskar Pelangi, those ten children played very simple games, they even didn’t seem to have ‘special tools’ to play with. For them, actually, ran under the rain with friends was their favorite game! For them, went to beach and saw the sunset with friends or climbing the tree behind their class together are also game! For them whatever the game is, it will be the best game in the world if they do it with their friends.
Nowadays, PSP, Hand phone, play station, and lots of electronic games are very popular. This game is also good for the cognitive of the children who play it, they learn how to plan a strategy to win the game and some other things, but on the other hand, this modern game shapes the children into an individual person who doesn’t want to socialize with others, their games is in their hands, so they don’t need other persons to play with.
The games that they played in Laskar Pelangi remind me of my childhood in Papua. I didn’t have much toys, most of my toys were made by my father. He was not a good toys inventor, but he was a very good father, so sometimes, in his free time, he tried to make toys from me, which were frankly were uhm…. too ‘complicated’, so I even didn’t know how to use it. But, actually I didn’t care if I didn’t have toys. I was happy enough if I could play hide and seek in the meadow with my friends, or swam in the river behind our homes, or rode my goats (pretending that they were cowboy horses… poor goats…). The best part of every game for me was actually friends, not the tools of the game.
Overall, I really admire Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana who can adapt Laskar Pelangi into a very beautiful movie. The movie is great, so does the novel. By the way I like the soundtrack of the Laskar Pelangi which is sung by Giring-Nidji, the title is also Laskar Pelangi. I enclose two verses that I really like:

Mimpi adalah kunci
Untuk kita menaklukan dunia
Berlarilah tanpa lelah
Sampai engkau meraihnya

Menarilah dan terus tertawa
Walau hidup tak seindah surga
Bersyukurlah pada Yang Kuasa
Cinta kita di dunia
Selamanya…
